In this tutorial we’ll take a look at how to build a stone wall like the one used here:
It’s all based off of half stud offsets.
For a small example I will show a simple section of wall.
The 1×1, 1×2, and 1×3 plates will be used to place bley blocks of stone at an offset, while the 1×2 jumper plates attach 1×1 sections of dark bley between the blocks.
These bley parts are stacked to make three blocks.
This picture shows how the standard plates give a half stud offset to the bley blocks by being attached into the central tube of the plates.
2×2 jumper plates atop the bley sections reverse the offset of the blocks.
So that another 1×10 plate in dark bley can be added. To give the proper stone block look, you’ll want to change where the vertical seams are between each layer of blocks.
With this setup I could do that simply by mirroring the block placement of the first layer. Besides that the same assemblies as before are repeated.
You can continue adding more layers, or cap it off with a few more dark bley plates and tiles.
If you’re low of the needed jumper plates and plates in dark bley and bley, you can use filler colors inside the building like I did with this watchtower.
A layer of dark bley plates with more jumper plates sets up the next layer:
Then it’s back to adding more bricks again:
By alternating where you place the ‘bricks,’ you can achieve a nice stone wall effect.
You can also this technique for a wall only 2 studs deep, and visible from both sides:
Again, some dark bley plates, and jumpers set up the next level:
Because the wall is only a stud deep for the ‘mortar’ section, 1×1 or 1×2 plates are used to offset the ‘bricks’.
It should look something like this when you’re finished:
Feel free to share any questions or comments you may have about this technique in the comments section!
Wow, I can leave comments here now! Great work, I might have to use this sometime! 🙂
Yup, pretty excited about that new feature 🙂
Would you happen to have a more detailed explanation of your building process for your wall technique? I’m building my first large scale castle as a beginner and it’s difficult to work some things out. I originally thought your outer wall layer was 2 studs thick but it seems that only the light grey blocks are. Did you use 1*3 plates between the light grey chunks?
I have tried many wall techniques and like this the most so far. It’s not easy to find a balance between sturdiness and good looks.
Thanks for the comment. You are correct, only the bley blocks are two studs thick. The dark bley sections are a single stud thick, and the bley sections are centered on that giving a half stud offset on either side. I will try to get some more pictures and edit this post with clearer descriptions.
I updated the post with a clearer example at the beginning. Hope it helps!
